I do like it when newspapers follow up on anything; too many are great at publishing attention getting stories, and dropping the ball on the follow up.
I'm glad to see the first two are moving forward, however unevenly. The last case, while sad, is fairly run of the mill for disability claims. One rarely gets approved on the first pass.
They were also dumb on the refinance. Unless the other bills totaled more than $1,000/month, they came out on the raw end of the deal. A mortage payment ballooning by a grand is awful. Being seven months behind, I'm surprised the foreclosure ball wasn't rolling yet. I'm assuming they would have still been foreclosed upon eventually, but been given $35k to depart and didn't take it? If so, they could have at least gotten out from under this and paid a year's rent somewhere in cash. If I were way behind on my mortgage in an area with a bad job market, wasn't getting any call backs, and was given $35k (they're on the road to foreclosure anyway), I'd take it and run. This case sounds like boneheaded decision making and bad luck all rolled together.
