More specifically healthcare? Does it depend on the facility? What is the average? 1 hour away? What if you live more than an hour from a job site?

Depends on the job and the 'why' you would be on call.

We have 3 types: 12 hour, 2 hour, and 15 minutes.

Edit: Ah, just saw healthcare. Sorry, different industry.

My husband is a surgeon and makes it a point to never be more than about 20-30 minutes away from the hospital at all times if he is in call, though it's very unusual that he has ever had to go in with that little notice, even on trauma call.

I don't think a specified time has ever been required per se, but there are definitely expectations about availability and communication while on call, and if those aren't met, you can be disciplined. I also know some residency programs do (or did in the recent past) require that residents live within a specific drive time to the hospital, often within 15-20 minutes. Of course, back in the day, you were required to remain on site the entire time while on call, in house, hence the terms "Resident" and/or "House Staff".

Umm, I would say that unless you have your own light aircraft that you are in the weeds.

On call distance/time will vary by industry maybe, but "on call" means just that. At that distance you have zero availability for an on call situation.

My guess is that if you're on call and do get called that you won't be able to respond, which will open you up to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Putting on my very old management hat I'd fire you if you failed to report to an on call.

And yes, I've been on call in the past. In fact have had vacations cancelled when an emergency cropped up just as I was leaving.
