I think you need to educate yourself. Educating yourself will open new doors and lead you to a better life.

Part of your problem (if I may be honest) is that you communicate like a 10th grade student. Learn to express yourself properly. Go to the book store. Go through the books on personal development, pick the one that sounds like it fills your need and GO FOR IT!

I speak from personal experience. When I was 22, I was no better off than you and I am recommending that you do exactly as I did. My quest for personal growth, born of the same frustration that you feel, has never stopped and hopefully, you will launch yourself on a never ending journey into personal growth.

I am now retired, and even though I never went to college I have our house and cars paid for and own enough income generating property to keep us comfortable forever.

I think you only have two choices. Leave or continue to perform your job.

Be sure you know what employment documents you have signed before you go. The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled that a promise of paid vacation time is contractual, and that unpaid accrued vacation must be compensated unless there is an express agreement that employees will not be paid for unused time...., so you may be due nothing at all.

Your current employer takes advantage of you because he believes you cannot leave. You cannot leave because you feel - and it may be a fact - you do not have much to offer. You need to change that component of who you are.

OP, Do you have anything in writing reference the promised pay increases and so forth? That will likely be the first question a lawyer will ask. You might try talking to someone at legal aid first. Here is are a couple sites that might be of some assistance. You might also Google legal aid Mississippi to find additional sources. Good luck to you.

Listener2307, I think your possibly well meaning personal advice would have been better suited to a direct message, as it is not at all related to the OP's inquiry.

Since this is a anonymous but still public forum, we must disagree.

The original poster, Fed Up, is expressing a frustration that is commonly felt among those who have encountered an obstacle in a given career path. If Fed Up does not fully understand his situation - and it appears he does not - then no lawyer will ever work him out of it. Going to a lawyer will result in, what? Netting a few hundred dollars is back pay, perhaps, after the lawyer takes his fee. And then Fed Up is left with a virtual GUARANTEE that he will be working in a hostile environment with no pay raise in sight. Ever.

Fed Up asked for actions he might take. I am recommending the actions I took all those years ago (1968!) that worked me out of a similarly frustrating environment. In his case, as in mine, I believe legal action is inadvisable because it will not solve the root problem.
