my husband is being flown there for a job interview. we know we can't afford to live in the heart of SV so we would probably live in a suburb about 30 miles away (maybe pleasonton, livermore, castro valley). can he ask off the bat if he can work 2 days from home? is this common in SV w/ the insane traffic and ridiculous home prices?
Try posting this in the San Jose forum, you may get more answers specific to SV. Some companies allow telecommuting and some don't, hopefully this one does.
It's quite common to work from home once you've been given your assignments and tasks. Some employers don't allow it and some recommend it. However I would be unpleased if I had just employed someone and they wanted to work from home in the first fortnight.
most tech jobs that i have had don't allow it (especially at first). some are a bit more open to it but usually it isn't more than 1 day/wk. of course ymmv but also realize that this is a risk if you ask them during the interview. but if it's important to you and you wouldn't take the job otherwise, he should ask.
if it's a big company, they might have free buses to take him to/from work even from pleasanton, etc.
when i am over there, i usually stay at my brother's house in livermore and commute to mountain view. it's bad and takes about 1.5 hours each way.

OP, look in the ACE train, it is a commuter rail that has stops in Livermore and Pleasanton and goes all the way out to the Silicon Valley, stopping by many major tech firms via coach shuttles after the train depot
And RVD is right many of the larger tech firms offer commuter buses as part of the "perks"!
If your husband works in technology and already has a reputation in the industry, most silicon valley companies would not care about if he works from home two days a week as long as the project he is on allows. If your husband is an unknown in silicon valley, then he should wait until he becomes known for his work. It usually takes 12-18 months for silicon valley to get acquainted with you.
Personally, I wouldn't ask for specific days I can telecommute; I'd just ask whether they had a telecommuting policy and the details.
