Just curious who still uses business cards? Our company was recently acquired and they gave us information for business cards. I haven't handed one out in years, and debating whether or not to get them.
Guess it all depends on how often you meet people. I still have them and hand it out when I go to conferences/shows/seminars. But more often than not, any vendor that I meet will have my contact info already via email. And I have never run out of them. The only reason I reorder cards is when my title changes.

Well, if they're free, something to consider.
Yes, at a tech major in Seattle, there are near-zero sheets of any kind of paper on anyone's desk. I don't blame my peers their idiosyncrasies: a few still use notepads and pen, most have switched to tablets that now have outstanding handwriting capability (as of quite recently). I have one pad of pink stickies for quick notes. We all have white boards, that a part of my mind thinks should self-erase (lol).
The copiers won't take jobs without scanning badges anymore. Thought that was a great idea to wean us off 90% of paper copies, of (anything). That whole scene is dead, never to return I profoundly hope outside the Third World.
And yes, I ordered a box of business cards some years ago. Still going strong. I seldom, if-ever, hand them out for business...but others do, at trade shows and similar. Good to hand to candidates at interviews, too.
Really, I pop them into places to identify something as mine: glasses cases, the few books I still own, sometimes left at front doors of my friends if they miss my knock, etc.
All that is optional, and a bit old-school. 20 years ago it was not. 40 years ago, mandatory. So you're basically right.
I wouldn't say I use mine often but definitely often enough to warrant having them. I've handed out maybe 25 or so in the last year.
