Classes to Learn the Cash Register? (find a job, money, hired, bill)

I've noticed a lot of retail places in my area, are only looking for cashiers and I have never worked as a cashier before. My parents suggested taking a class to learn how to use one but are there even such a class? To learn skills like this one or similar one's?
I don't think so. When I became a cashier it was like a 1 hour tutorial on a computer then you go straight on the register. It's not that hard anyway, just ask questions your first day and you'll figure it out quickly
Not only are most of them so simple to operate that pretty much anyone can do it (even customers), there are so many different ones that a class would be pretty much impossible anyway.
Most of them have on screen instructions that walk you through every step. Have you even used a self checkout register? If so, then you already know how to run one in whichever store you used it.

It's hard to know because there's no dominant design in POS systems. That and many may take cashiering experience for knowing the basics of POS and can mold them into their specific including the quick action buttons.

If you have used the self service checkout at Home Depot, Walmart, or any grocery store, you have some experience. Hardly anyone uses cash, and you don't even have to count it in your head now, you enter the bill denomination and it tells you the change amount. If they require experience, classes won't help, unless no one else with experience applies. Look for a "Mom & Pop" non-chain store where they may take a chance on someone without experience.

Granted this was 1996, but I was hired I was hired as a cashier and I did not have any experience. I had to take a paper math test for some reason. Passed it. Then job shadowed a clerk for about 10 minutes before she had me take over. After about 30 minutes, I was good enough to be let alone.
I would not waste my money on cash register lessons. My suggestion would be to find the manager. Introduce yourself. Say to him or her that I would like to be part of your team as front end associate here at [name of store], and do this with an energetic and happy demeanor. After all, you are the last person the customer sees before they leave the store!!!!

Not all retail stores need or want experienced cashiers. About three years ago when I was still in college, I wanted a part time job and started looking around. I had never worked in retail but was able to find a job as a retail cashier quite easily. Almost everywhere I applied called, except Best Buy, the place I really wanted to work.
Anyway, if you can get an interview, just show that you are very outgoing, friendly, and willing to be a team player and you will be fine.
