I currently do not have any HR experience but would like to break into the HR field does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about this? Websites/recruiting companies that pertain specifically to helping people find HR jobs, any free online courses that provide certifications? Any resources that you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated..Thank you!
I only got into it because of a staffing agency. I have heard, otherwise, that it is extremely hard to get into HR as they want people with previous experience. I'd say even recruiting, if you get into that field, would help you break into HR. I do believe there are also certificates you can get that may attract HR people's attention so that you can get into HR and it will make them look at you.
Do you have any skills that could be transferred into an HR type role?
Find a job as an admin assistant to HR staff, take the courses above. Once you have seen the function on a day to day basis and have the knowledge then apply for a HR position.
I have been in HR for 20 years, and before that, worked as a corporate paralegal. My first question is what attracts you to HR? There are many facets, such as benefits, employee relations, performance management, recruiting, knowing employment law front and back (CA has the toughest laws and regulations, writing (employee handbooks, forms, etc.). I started out as an HR Coordinator in an engineering firm with the CFO as my mentor (I was very lucky). From there, I gained more experience over the years, all in tech and life sciences, mostly as a generalist for a rounded background. I have a BA in psychology.
Earning a SPHR and a PHR takes time, study and is pricy. Employers often ask for that in their postings for experienced HR professionals.
As the others recommended, start out in an administrative role in an HR department. The members are experienced in the different roles and you will learn a lot. This will give you a chance to decide if you want to pursue this career.
HR is challenging and varies from employer to employer.
Best of luck.
