I recently got a new job in "transportation" (trying to keep this anonymous) Anyway, my job pays $14 an hour total BUT I receive two separate checks...one for $12 an hour and the other for $2 an hour.

Is this normal? Does anyone know why they would do this? I am fulltime and rarely get OT.

Are they issued by two different agencies? For example, one is from the city and the other from the state?

Was there something you are to be compensated for like gas or supplies?
Are you working on behalf of two or more organizations? Check the budget to see where your pay is coming from. It might be partially grant funded.

Paychecks dont offer much info. Though It is a private company that is payed by the city government...so that may be why. Never had this happen before.

Sounds like a per diem that generally isn't going to be taxed.

Probably the pay is charged to two different budgets, and their financial system is not set up to split the expense to two different codes so they have to do two checks. It could even be an error, they issued the $12 check and then corrected it by issuing the $2 check.
