Network Administration != Desktop Support @ BestBuy either.
I'ts like getting a degree in Marketing then complaining you can't get hired to do Human Resources.
He didn't Google the college at all during his vetting process? Not one little Google to see what the school was about? A little bit of intellectual curiosity? Tech guys who are not curious are not tech guys. Period.
Way to take a brave stand and refuse to make your payments. So brave and so amazing that we have individuals like this at the vanguard of our freedom movement. I think I'll tweet that.
Isn't Best Buy in trouble? It's unlikely that anybody will get a job at a business that is sinking, particularly in a non-retail position like tech support.
With an AS degree, it's going to be harder for him no matter which school he attended.
The title of this thread is misleading. A "computer science degree" implies that he got a BS degree in Computer Science, not an AS degree in Network Administration. Huge difference.
First of all - as other's have said, is his choice of school. He was basically defrauded of 37K for a worthless education.
It costs about 3k a year to attend a community college full time, at the most if should have cost him 6k for an associates degree.
An associates degree in IT without experience is about as valuable as toilet paper. You really need a bachelors degree before you can get into decent paying IT jobs without experience.
"There is debate whether a degree in network administration can be considered computer science, though it is an element of the broader computer science major."
His local Colorado Springs community college, Pike's Peak C.C. charges $124.90 per credit for instate students (apparently they get a subsidy to lower their rate from $199)
60 credits for an A.S.
60 * 124.90 = $7,500
Lets just double that because he bought all brand new books and didn't sell any back... decided to take the Cisco tracks and pay the kit fees... took extra classes... paid for stuff he didn't need... and just plan wasted money and wasn't thrifty.
That splurging still totals $15,000
For a legit A.S. that can transfer if he wants to a full 4 year university.
They offer A.S. in
- Computer Science
- Computer Information Systems
- Computer Network Technology
and a few others
The fact that he couldn't get a Geek Squad job, which is just COTS desktop support mostly, speaks as much of a bad resume and poor interviewing skills as anything else.
Forget that most guys think once they have a degree they can get any job.
He didn't even mention if he did internships or has previous work experience.
IT is a field where if you plan to go to college to study for it, at least have a part time job in the field because experience trumps a degree in IT.
What a degree does mostly in the field is get your foot in the door.
Don't think your going to start out in a luxury job already.
Entry level jobs like JR Programmer help desk and desktop support help you get better jobs

I agree with this, but this AS degree should at least qualify him for the most rudimentary of IT positions. Something else is not right.
