Have you ever had an interview scheduled to meet the VP, but he has you meet with a VP from another team? What is the purpose of this?

I had something like this happen many years ago. I had done two group interviews and the third interview was supposed to be with the department director. Another director intercepted the interview. I found out 6 months later from someone within the company that the director I was originally supposed to meet with was laid off.

Your situation sounds like some kind of politics or major organizational reorg looming in the background.

This sounds pretty reasonable.

Now I will add the caveat that if you were supposed to meet with someone at the VP level and instead you are meeting with someone lower in the reporting structure it can be a sign that the VP did not feel it was worth their time to meet with you for whatever reason.. Not usually a good sign..

often companies do this especially if multiple departments have openings. The person might not be a good fit for one department, but might be a good fit for another.

It means usually that they are interested, but want to get another perspective about a candidate.
