I stumbled into a job fair today. I didn't plan on going but I did plan on touching base with this company while my background checks for the other 2 places went through. Because of what I prefer to do for a living I am not available on the weekends. I understand that if someone is specifically looking for someone to work on the weekend that is a no go. However I have worked for this company before. I know that what they are really after is a very broad availability so they can use you as they see fit. However they do not pay a living wage and the hours fluctuate. Unless your parents pay a large part of your living expenses, you are supported by a spouse, or you are living on student loans you can not support yourself working for this company. What really got me is that while I was waiting for another manager to come by two of the managers in front of me started to talk. They talked about how someone not being available on the weekends was a deal breaker for them. If they were to step down to the position i was applying for they would do so on the condition that they wouldn't work weekends themselves. I have worked for this company previously for nearly a decade most of the managers do not work evenings or weekends. They are hiring as if they have a pool of desperate people begging for work. Because of how the economy in this part of the country is structured they are experiencing high turn over. The reason is these employers are higher as if they are doing the employees a favor and not as if they are hiring employees to serve there customers.
