I just started working for a big-ass engineering firm a little over 2 weeks ago. It's a multi-billion dollar, multi-national company.
For those of you who haven't been keeping track with the news, Illinois is having a budget standoff right now. As a result, the department of transportation is slowly shutting down its operations. Everything is expected to shut down by next week if things don't get resolved. They did this for 5 months 8 years ago.
Today, our office got really crowded. Engineers from projects that got shut down were told to come to take refuge in our office. Suffice it to say, we had a lot of fun today as I divided up tasks for everyone to have something to do as we discussed everything from aliens to bitcoins. Upper management decided to keep these guys "working" and pay them using company overhead as they figure out where to assign them next.
I talked with some people in other companies and it sounds like people from other companies aren't so lucky. They were told to sit at home as a sort of unpaid leave or downright laid off. I also got word from someone in my old company that they'd started telling some engineers to stay home.
So, is my new company ethical and realizes that their employees have kids to feed, too, or am I looking too much into this?

Some companies will eat the cost of having people with no assignments in order to keep them on the books and not have them start looking elsewhere. At least for a short time.
Others won't.
Your bosses probably realize that the budget impasse will likely be solved shortly and it'll be back to business.

I think you are right. Even with that, it tells me they can see farther than some other companies. Morale has a lot to do with work performance. I know I would start snooping around for another company if my own company won't even try to retain people.

What other company will you apply to if all other companies are forcing furloughs?
You currently have a boss who is apparently concerned about the financial welfare of his employees. Don't try to read anything into it other than that.

There are plenty of options that are not affected by the dept of trans. And I didn't mean right away.
The first engineering firm I worked for, I thought I was going to there forever. I left because I felt they did not try enough to keep me. Ever since, I've met a few people who said the same thing about their ex employers.
When I said I would start snooping around, I didn't mean right away. But the sense of loyalty would certainly be compromised.
My job is actually not affected by what's going on with the state. But it's good to know they won't leave me out in the cold at the first sign of trouble.
