Most IT corporate Jobs are 9 to 5 you may be on call if you are higher up on advance technical ranks ( Network System Admin etc)
That said
Don't work for business that operates 24/7 or on a conveyor belt.
( Hospitals , fast food , retail, some law firms, etc) those places are MOSTLY terrible with IT work life balance

My wife works at a school, and when some idiot teacher opens a virus email, all hands are on deck overnight and/or the weekend to clean up the system.
They don't pay very well, either. I see one current opening in IT at our local district, Applications Support Analyst, $73k, 5 years experience.
It depends on how well the IT structure is to begin with. As Hemlock140 mentioned, a teacher opened a virus in her email and hosed the system. A good system would be able to recover faster from that versus a bad one.
Most common after hours work for me as a system admin is patches and system upgrades. In two years of where I'm at now I've only had one disaster recovery incident that kept me in the office an extra 3 hours. Other than that 9 to 5 is standard unless you work for a circus.
I do have a friend who does IT in a hospital who gets to be on 24-call for one week every two months. He rarely gets called as far as I know.
Any job that involves main responsibility of a system or network that are critical mission can mean outside 9 to 5
Avoid systems and network and servers
Computer support techs and desktop technicians work 9 to 5
IT business anaylst are also good 9 to 5 jobs and some programming jobs
There are a couple of folks on my current team who worked at the state flagship university. While they said the pay was peanuts, the benefits and working environment were hard to beat.
Not really sure what type of banks you're referring to, but I can tell you that 9-5 IT jobs are pretty much non-existent in investment banks. 24/7 IT support and application/system maintenance is the norm. I speak from first hand experience.
