I've done it before and I'm looking to do it again to where I hope to settle permanently.
I've been working on relocating for some time now and think I'm pretty close. I have two job interviews set up for the very near future and think I have a good chance of at least one working out.
Yes. I'm not sure that there was some secret to doing it though. I think it was a combination of good work experience, skills that employers were looking for, a good job mkt in the area I moved to, and luck. I got a lot of calls for interviews so had to take a good deal of time off - I actually got a warning from my supervisor because I took a couple of days during a tough period at work. I was able to secure 3 offers. My wife had a similar experience, which was a big relief because we both needed work.
We moved from a very low COL area to a very high one. Things worked out well. So if I had to put my finger on it, I would say it was a combo of all the things mentioned – the right skills, good experience, a good job mkt, and luck. I had control over 3 of those factors.
G-fused pretty much hit the nail on the head. Its a lot easier to do if you already have contacts and connections in the area that you're moving to, or you have solid experience in a field that is always in high-demand (engineering, finance, programming/development, medical, etc.).
The only people I know that have relocated to another job out of state were offered the opportunity by their current employer. There's pretty much zero incentive for an employer to recruit out of state if they can find the same talent locally.
right skills at the right time. I was also fairly open to the type of work I would take, as long as it sounded like fun.
