No you don't have to tell your current employer anything other than you are leaving.

I never would. I'd just simply say I was leaving for another professional opportunity that is more in-line with what I want to do. Simple and vague.

Not unless you have a non-competition clause, but frankly it's a little weird not to unless you're ashamed of it or haven't made any connections at your current job. The way you leave can impact the reference you receive, and you may need this reference in the future even though you have a new job. Better to control the message yourself proactively.

Why go thru all of that - and then potentially have it be an issue later. Life is to short to complicate it unnecessarily. Unless there is a compelling reason to withhold the information, just be upfront about it and move on. This is probably a bigger issue for OP than it is for anyone else.

The reason to go through all that is to avoid the nightmares illustrated in post #8 and keep it from being an issue later. If you tell them and they don't like who you are going to for some reason they could make things difficult for you. If you don't tell them they may wonder what you are hiding and keep pestering you or start snooping. So give them an answer that satisfies their curiousity and makes it a total non-issue as far as they are concerned.

Don't say. Nothing good will come of it, but bad things could possibly come of it.

There really aren't any rules anymore. You don't care about the company and they don't care about you. If they were nice to you you can give them a two week's notice. That's about it.
