i just started a new non exempt job and was reading the handbook about filling out timesheets. do i seriously have to account for every minute i am there? for example the first week, my manager set my schedule and some days she told me to come in around noon, other times she said i should leave around 3 pm. can i just write 9-5:30 pm daily for that or am i expected to write in that i worked 3 hours one day, 6 hours another day. i have always worked exempt positions so this is new to me. for what it's worth my manager already said she is very "hands off" and does not even work in the same city as i do (just the first week we are together as i'm in training).

Yes, if you are non exempt, your time sheet should reflect the hours you work.
Your manager set your schedule. If you only work 3 hours, why do you expect the company to pay you 8 hours.

Since you are new to the company, why don't you talk to your manager about your schedule and ask her how you should fill out your time sheet?

Is this a full time or part time job?

i expect the company to pay me 8 hours a day b/c i signed up for a full time job. it's not my fault that my manager told me to come in at 12 since that's when she was planning to come in that day. and told me to leave early b/c the computers went down.

If I were you in this case, I would talk to my manager before I submit my time sheet. I wouldn't want to start off on the wrong foot as a new employee.

Since you are full time, she might be ok with you putting down 8 hours.

Regardless of what the supervisor says, that's considered falsification of records and in any company I have worked for that's grounds for immediate firing. At the very least, get it in writing from the supervisor so you can take her down with you.

Hourly employees must account for their time. It is as simple as that. You need to speak to the manager to see if she will authorize a full day's pay for three hours of work.
