Has anyone ever worked both in the public and private sectors??? (within last 10 years)
Which job had the better benefits/worklife/Perks??
Does anyone here work the 5/4/9 schedule where you get every other friday off? Do you ever work more than 40 hours a week?
Think someone could run a business part time while working for the govt?
Government has better retirement and vacation benefits. There'd be blood in the streets, as they say, if people knew some of those benefits (separate sick/vacation buckets which accrue each paycheck, comptime which you can later cash in if you work over 8.0 hours/days, ability to get a refund of retirement contributions - unlike SS, generous holidays)
I've worked as an accountant for a county agency for the past 9 years and worked as an accountant in the private sector the previous 9 years. My government job has better benefits, more job security and less stress. But my private sector job offered a higher salary. I have worked overtime at both jobs, but it's quite rare now. Usually overtime comes up when there's a major deadline, a computer software conversion or when someone quits. My employer offers a flex schedule....working 4, ten hour shifts. Several employees in several departments are on flex time. I, however, am not. I can't stand getting up as it is. If I have to get up early four days just to have one day off, it's not worth it to me. Plus, I'd feel guilty leaving my dog home alone for 10+ hours a day.
I worked in a government sector for about 6 years, and the benefits are very good. Besides ALL the holidays off, got 4 weeks off for vacation, sick pay, etc. But left due to the vast incompetency of staff, noone gets fired for their laziness or poor attitude. And the boredom and dullness. Just did not want to become one of them.
