In May I began a part-time job working at the local YMCA in the wellness center. I work 10.5 hours per week at minimum wage, the work is easy but due to several different circumstances I am going to give my 2 week notice on Monday. My question is how detailed to I need to be about why I am leaving? There are numerous reasons I am quitting the job most of which I really do not want to get into with my supervisor. Some of the circumstances might lead her to offer me another time slot (which I do not want) or to take a leave of absence (which again I do not want.) I do know that I plan to try and get another job eventually so I want to make sure I leave in good standing. Any input would be greatly appreciated, I hadn't worked in over 20 years because I was home raising my kids and I don't have anymore than a high school education, so I really appreciated my supervisor taking a chance on me and hiring me, in doing so I at least gained more recent job experience.

You are NOT required to give a reason nor do you have to explain anything when you give your 2 week notice. Give your 2 week notice and leave, that's it.

What Bolo said. But obviously, things aren't always as easy as it sounds. On your letter, you basically state you are resigning your position, provide the effective date, and thank them for the opportunity. That's it.

However, the letter is just an official communication that goes to HR. In most cases, you would notify your manager in person (and either bring the letter with you, or provide it later via email). This would often open up a conversation over the reasoning behind your decision. So you may still want to come up with a "neutral" reason. I think this being a part-time position may be easier to do. I would just say that you prefer to spend more time at home with family.

you can simply state that you are resigning effective XX date.

keep it short and simple..
