Why would an employer take a risk on a candidate that has been fired vs one with a perfect track record?
Depends on reason for termination.
"Fired for cause" ie; theft, lying, etc can be an obvious problem
"Let go for lack of work" not a big deal. Happens to lots of people.
"Reduction in force (RIF). Again, happens to the best.

It depends on the reason for the termination, and whether it sounds worse than an gap in employment.Neither is going to be helpful, but you could still end up as the best candidate.
Most companies will allow you to quit rather then to get fired.
