How does one wear a suit to work in surfin', laid back San Diego?

Most workplaces (especially tech) have some sort of business casual dress which includes short-sleeve shirts, jeans, even sneakers. Hawaiian shirts are standard Friday attire. I have worked in shorts-n-flip-flops shops and now I work in a more corporate setting.

I like to dress nicely - right now that is pressed slacks and long-sleeve cotton dress shirts. But I'd like to be able to wear a suit to work from time-to-time - I love the way I feel when I'm wearing them.

I work in IT, so for most people, dressing in a suit is an abberation. There are guys on other floors who wear suits, and most of the senior execs do, but no one in IT, not even the VP. I tried wearing a tweed sportjacket to work and I've was asked "when's the interview?" by about ten people.

So how to do it? I'm thinking about rotating in sportjackets... maybe one or two times a week, so they get used to me wearing a jacket, then rock the suit?

The other question I have... shouldn't this be in the fashion forum?

Probably in the Fashion forum...I think there is a thread for a Metrosexual somewhere! Anywhoo, my suggestion is to pick up a Land's End or LL Bean catalogue or go to their website. Personally, I think a navy sport jacket over an oxford shirt (no tie!) is a pretty hot outfit with leather mocs/loafers.

Maybe if you skip the socks with your suit, you'd look suitably casual?

Wear what you want. Don't worry about other people.

I hate suits and ties. They're expensive, uncomfortable, and seem to ge on their way out. When I go into the office, it's just a polo and khakis. At home, t-shirt and jeans or shorts. If I had my way, my entire wardrobe would be t-shirts, jeans and shorts. Shoes would be limited to none or flip flops - athletic shoes for running and gym. Life is too short to be uncomfortable! (I do own a suit for funerals and job interviews though)

To each his own... but at least in the 'high fashion' world, they are on their way back in.

Dress slacks, Dress shirt, Tie and Jacket - part of my normal attire.

But, much depends upon the type of event / meeting of the day. And, it depends upon the group I'm meeting with and the location.

Because my plans tend to get changed / scrambled, my traveling wear also includes a Tux.

I think it is cool to wear a suit to work occasionally and if the job warrants it. Occasionally I do have a meeting to attend and the suit fits. One thing to make sure is that you find a taylor to make sure it fits you. Getting one off the wrack is fine and cost effective, just take it to your favorite taylor and get it to fit your body type. One thing though is there aren't a lot of good taylors out there anymore. We used to have quite a few around here. Almost like Cobblers, few people going into that profession as well.
