You're talking about highly pilferable items that cost a lot as they're walking out the door. Procedures are in place. Deal with it.
Why not just tag the equipment with sensors that'll trigger an alarm if they're not checked out properly? Magnetic, RFID, doesn't matter. As opposed to having to visit three different rooms to pick up one monitor, then visit the same rooms again just to return the keys.

Probably when the procedures were put in place the technology wasn't available or cost effective.
As a note, I was going to ask you where you taught since what you described was my school system's system wide procedure. Sign for everything. The biggest difference was staff didn't get to touch the keys but had to wait for the IT person to arrive with them.

Except for the most menial of office jobs, computer equipment is cheap compared to employee time. Draconian hardware control measures are almost always penny wise and pound foolish. As an employee you have to deal with company policy, but crippling productivity does not indicate good management.

Sounds like this co. has taken a page from the Fed. Govt.

That would likely not be the case at this place, huge difference apples and oranges.
