The other day my coworker said in front of our manager that she was so annoyed with some of the outside sales reps that she wanted to "slit their throats". Of course it was a joke but I'm concerned that might be a bit too much. I might say I want to slap them or something but murder them? I don't think my manager would do anything since he is pretty easy going but you really have to be careful in the workplace.

agreed. I am an easy going manager and I would have had a talk with that person.

report it anyways, if she can convince boss to not fire her, she will learn a lesson and if she gets fired, she learned a different lesson.

people who joke about that have little respect/regard for others,

As a manager, I would write up that person, with a stern warning, and probably even involve HR who could order a psychiatric evaluation. There have been too many mass murders lately to take something like that too lightly.

Depending on the person, they may not need any more than a warning, but making any comment like that is incredibly foolish.

And that's where it starts. Beware this person.

In our company, that remark would require a report, which can be made by anyone who heard it to his own supervisor or to an anonymous hotline/email.

While that particular remark in that circumstance is likely to be shrugged off with no more than a counseling session, the circumstance would only have to be slightly different for the same kind of remark to be a sign of something much more serious.

No big deal in my eyes, I have said I wanted to murder annoying people at work to friends at work and its taken as a joke as it should be. People are over sensitive these days. Do you want to be first on the list for snitchin if this person was serious, which obviously is not the case since you said it was said in a jokingly manner. People need to really just mind their own business at work and quit reading into something that isn't there.

It's a common thought I think. But we currently live in a social atmosphere where voicing our thoughts is dangerous.

I'm in mind of a grade-schooler who had made a list of people he wanted to kill and how that was handled. You'd think he'd been a budding axe-murderer though the chances are good that he was angry and using the list to blow off a little steam.

I think if most of us are honest there's been someone in our lives we've had that thought about at least once. It's probably best not to mention it and put others in the position of trying to read your mind and predict the future.
