I'm starting a new job on May 15 but the HR person who I have been dealing with throughout the hiring process sent me an email telling me to come in this morning (May 1) at 9 am to fill out paperwork and complete an orientation. He seemed totally shocked to see me this morning and said that I should have just showed up on the 15 for the process because that is what was written in the letter of offer. He sent me this email after I sent him a signed copy of the letter of offer. Who was mistaken here and should I be worried that there is already a strike against me before I have even started?

He told you to come in via email today then was surprised to see you? Then says you should have just come in on the date on the letter? I'd be confused to and would have went this morning. Did you question him why he asked to see you this morning after the whole letter had taken place?

Well in his email he said that the purpose of today was to deal with paperwork, get a badge, etc, etc. I responded to the email to confirm receipt of it and I did say something along the lines of "See you May 1". When I showed up today he wasn't expecting me so he had to scramble to put all the documents together for me to fill out.

Who said May 1, first? you or him. Remember it could have been a typo, and someone missed the 5 key.

Why didn't you just say, "ohh a miscommunication, I'll see you May15th, no need to get anything together." everybody goes about their day.

He stated May 1st in his original email. Since it was written that way (1st as opposed to 1) I didn't think it was a typo. I also didn't find it unusual that I was being asked to come in ahead of my start date to deal with paperwork because my current company did this when they hired me.

Relax. Just go home and come back on the 15th. No harm done.

Relax man, just show him the email if he doesn't believe you.

Why would that even be a strike against you.

Total no issue.

A typo? I'm not paying you to make mistakes.

He probably does new employee orientation every two weeks -- I'm guessing he copies & pastes the email to new hires each time and forgot to change the date when he emailed you. I wouldn't expect him to penalize you for his own mistake; however, I agree that he should have just had you come back on the 15th rather than "scrambling."
