I worked for Raytheon as a contractor. As soon as that contract ended, that was it. Same with a lot of big companies. I worked for Disney, too. It was great, good people, great cafeteria, but the pay was low, and a corporate decision to end that endeavor came down, and I didn't even finish the week. The agency called me on my cell at 5:30 on Thursday to say, "Today was your last day. Don't even go in tomorrow." A job with the state would be better for the long term, I think.
I have several engineer friends that work for Raytheon. It's big pay, and big promotions, but also a month, sitting in the middle of a desert testing a weapon system, and 60-70+ hr weeks.
They are family guys, and I don't know how they do it.
SO....state of MA job, or Raytheon..with equal pay/benfits/etc? I'll take state of MA.
I'd take Raytheon if I was 24 and single and just wanted to get some experience, and earn some money.
State job. My only regret with my career is that I didn't take the government job I was offered right out of college. I'd be close to retirement by now.
Say you have two offers from two different Companies with similar position, salaries, benefits etc.. Which one would you prefer?
1) Employment Opportunity with the State (MA for example)
2) Government Contracting Company like Raytheon
Thanks!
Private industry over a government job any day. Because with real private industry skills you can move around to any place you wish, make more money and gain important skills. Government jobs are dead-end jobs and they are essentially a dumping ground for people who can't cut it in private industry.

That is what I am concerned about to be honest. I currently work for a Private company making really good money, so if I am at any time offered a state job, I do not see myself making that much not even a thousand or two less, I am guessing at least 8-10K less annually, which is a NO NO for me. Who takes a pay cut to join a state job.
I would add a third option, a small company in the private sector that has a flat structure.
