Because most people cant generate the start up costs requried with their low pay day jobs. Real estate, work floor space (metal building, shop, what have you), equipment, etc.

Most people dont have the disposable income to pull this off anymore. I am working on it but I was just recently laid off mid way through a proto type development, if I cant duplicate my income without having to uproot my infrastructure then the development of my buisness will slow to a crawl.

Alot of companies that are around are legacy companies, companies that have generational wealth and influance. Sure there are some start ups like google and its obviously not impossible to become an entrepenuer but its not easy.

Now does that mean that those of us still trying to build our seed money should be treated like surfs or peasants?

Companies make it very difficult to attract and retain employees. People have pretty much had it with stagnant wages since the 90s. We should be doing better.

I just got a offer today for a Telecommunication Specialist position in Raleigh for basically $50k a year, or $24 an hour, and an extra $4k a year for on call time. But you are basically on call 24/7 all year long working on telecommunications keeping central offices running. The guy offering the job said I was over qualified for the job and if I accepted it asked me for a long term commitment.

I am thinking about it honestly only because I am looking to move back to NC from CA. But the pay is low.

Well, if they'd pay people more than $11 an hour maybe they could find people. You pay peanuts, you get nothing. People will just stay at home playing video games or build up student loan debt.

Because forced labor is aborant. Gainful employment doing productive meaningful work is FAR different than digging a hole for a sociopath to flick his ciggerette butt into and you cover it up which is what you are implying when you say stuff like that.

Yes some phases of some jobs are hard work but the way people like you make it sound as if these people would be doing nothing but hard labor in a gulag. Few in the USA are going to tolerate that, we fought wars against countries that behaved that way.

50K and on call 24/7??? Sounds like an exploitive employer. I wouldn't take it. You could be making $5/hr before its all said and done or worse

No kidding. At $50K/yr there better be a very strict delineation between my work and home life unless maybe there's a significant opportunity/pay increase just around the corner. Triple that and then you start getting my attention.

And of course, if businesses are going to offer low wages, no benefits, and no pensions, have schedules that change at the drop of a hat, cut hours to 25 or less in a week sometimes, fire their employee for any infraction, and treat their employees like a piece of crap, why would they think anyone would work for them? Companies should know the word goes around. If you have a crappy company with low pay, no benefits and lousy bosses, job seekers in an economy like this will know who you are and avoid you.
Yes, yes, yes! I see many Executive Assistant jobs that require a Bachelor's or sometimes even a Master's degree. Really? To support (be a slave) the CEO or Sr. VP? To answer phones, type, do mail merges, powerpoint presentations, some Excel reports, travel arrangements, order lunch for meetings, perhaps attend Board meetings and take the meeting notes? SERIOUSLY??? And they are going to pay you $50K a year to do this when 20 years ago companies didn't want to hire people for this job if they had an Associate's degree because they said, "Oh, this job doesn't need a degree." AND this type of job was paying about $45K in 1999 (I know because I had the job) and now they want to start us at $50K or $55K umpteen years later plus they want the advanced degree too? Are these people high?

They act as if they are hiring you to be the CEO! What the HR people and hiring managers don't get is that I have been doing this job since 1996. I can do it in my sleep. It's not rocket science to support a big shot because basically you are just his servant. Unless they want the EA to do budgets and perhaps supervise other admin assistants, then I can see them wanting the person to have a degree.

If you have a crappy company with low wages and lousy working conditions, it'll be known very quickly nowadays thanks to sites like Glassdoor and Indeed. I used to think the employee reviews were b.s. until I worked at two companies that have less than a 3 star rating and terrible reviews. What the people said on those reviews were SPOT ON and 100% correct.
