Let's say you have a decent job where you are valued, known, and liked for the most part. What would happen if you just suddenly stopped showing up and never responded to any communication? What would they do? Would they check to make sure you didn't die or what? Would they call your emergency contact? Just curious.
The would probably run by your house, or ask the police to stop by to see if you were okay. If you have an emergency contacted listed, that is also a good place to start. Why?
They will check on you for sure to find out what happen. If they can't find an answer, they simply assume the person left the job without any notification. the next step would be looking for someone to replace you. As important as you may think, the world continue to revolve with or without any of us.

my company would fire you after being a "no call, no show" after 3 consecutive days (well, that's the policy anyway)
Weird question though.. would my current boss do this? No way, he'd reach out via email and phone to make sure something didn't happen.

Had it happen one time. Lady at a electronics firm went home on a Saturday, laid down and never woke up. I didn't see her Monday or Tuesday, her friends were calling her home (Before massive use of cellphones) and finally on Wednesday they gathered her friends and broke the bad news to them.
I wondered this as well as that's why I gave my last employer's HR a number I knew was out of service as my emergency contact. I was tempted to write 9-1-1 on the line instead of a name and personal number because I didn't want them to have a family member's contact info.
