..because people have BILLS to pay regardless...That doesn't stop.
I wish they would do away with unpaid internships.I wonder for those who do take them...how the hell do they pay their bills.Do they do the unpaid internship for the day and then work a paying job at night?Does anyone see anything wrong with UNPAID internships? At least pay them 5$ an hr...something...

The only people I've known who did unpaid internships were college kids living at home whose mommy and daddys were paying all of the bills. They also lived in the wealthy neighborhoods.

I think this pretty clearly violates what the department of labor classifies as an internship. I would outright tell the interviewer you wont work for free and threaten to contact the labor board with that offer.

I watched one of my friends get screwed here. Hes a software engineer and his boss kept skipping his paychecks. He finally just start job searching at work and got another job but the back pay was close to 30k. He thankfully filed a lawsuit with the state department of labor, but it seems like he may only get a small fraction of whats owed back due to overly lenient bankruptcy laws.

I would have a talk with the labor board of your state. There are six criteria of which all must be met not one to allow a company to have unpaid interns Unpaid Internship Rules - FindLaw. It sounds like what they are doing in your case is not legal.

Wait about another 10 years where everybody learns programming, and they be replaced like a trash bag we are treated as. I remember 20 years ago my job had a starting hour 35$ from the seniors here. That was a big deal back then.. Now were lucky to get people in for 10-15 a hour depending on experience. Because were saturated with this type of skill set, we can be replaced in 10 mins. Lucky, i negotiated on what i wanted to start and my future goal at the end of the year pay raise. Got it in writing so nobody can retract it unless i get released. Now business owners want cheap wages but want more out of you. As we want more work i do, more pay i require..

Do the rich parents realize they are subsidizing businesses by underwriting the costs of the free labor?

Why do they expect people to work for free?

Because they can.

The law is very clear that in almost all cases these so-called internships are nothing more than unpaid work, enriching the employer without providing much of anything of value to the unpaid workers.

The Department of Labor should really crack down, but I don't expect to see that anytime soon.

Medical assistants make $30K a year...

So I agree with OP, its totally insane to expect people to work for free for a year with a career that has a $30K ROI on it and little development potential.

The whole "unpaid internship" thing used to be pretty routine in the television business, but Department of Labor cracked down on it. I know it was also extremely common in parts of the non-profit/arts world, and I'm not sure if they have the same rules.

I've never experienced this -- so I have a couple questions if you don't mind. Have you gone on job interviews and the employer actually states they want you enter an unpaid internship program? Do they advertise it this way?
