If previous job was in the retail industry, warehousing? Laid off due to seasonal work volume. Laid off is more like the company had to downsize, and when you use seasonal, a lot of companies hire people for heavy business times, then lay them off, but sometimes they keep newbies and release other employees due to whatever likes or dislikes they choose.
Have you applied for Unemployment benefits? whether you receive them or not is also an indicator of how you will be referenced.
