Hi guys!!

Long story short - 26 male Sr. Finance Analyst here working in NYC.

I am currently working for Mod cut.. I love mostly everything about this company - the culture [I can wear jeans/polo shirts anytime I want), people (friendly and laid back), discounts ($$), and commute (35 mins from where I live), and my current salary isn't bad either.

Last month Mod cut. reached out to me regarding the same exact position at their company (Sr. Finance Analyst). I was never looking to jump ship, but looking at a big finance company like that really tempted me.. so I went for an interview anyway just to see how much I'm worth.

Unexpectedly, a day after my first interview, my boss told me she wants to promote me to manager but AFTER she's back from maternity leave (she's out til october). So right now all I got is a verbal promise from her. God knows how long that'll take + if she will change her mind or not.

Now that I actually have an offer on my hands, I don't know what to do.
I originally asked for 90, which they said was definitely possible (on the first call).
Now they came back to me with 83K. I'm currently at 75K. Idk how much raise I'll get if I were to become a manager here.. From what I've heard, it's prob going to be around 85-90.

People tell me Mod cut. is a great company to work for.. that their culture + benefits are great. But I'm just not sure if it makes sense for me to make a lateral move.

Pros and cons so far (at Mod cut.).

Pro: Bigger company
Pro: More money now
Pro: More room for opportunities down the road
Pro: 9-5. I'm currently 9-6
Pro: More vacation time I think.. (6 weeks there vs 3 weeks here)

Cons: Commute (will take me 1 hour and 10 mins roughly)
Cons: Shirts and slacks (business casual.. can't wear jeans anymore)
Cons: Starting all over again

Thoughts?!

[The new company.].

Mod cut. I do not believe will survive long-term, like much of retail.

A general rule in life, if it's not in writing, it doesn't exist.

You have a job offer from [new company], you don't have anything from Mod cut. until it's in writing. For all you know, your boss thinks it's a good idea to promote you but doesn't have the OK from HR or her boss yet.

Your current boss wants a smooth leave. She doesn't want to be called in early. But you are happy there. Your current company will need to acquire a larger web presence to stay healthy.

Stand firm on 90K politely. Tell them that 83K would not be enough of an inducement to move. Research the hell out of Mod cut. before you say yes.

Oh yea, like post three says get your offer in writing.

[The new company].

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. A solid job offer now is worth a definite maybe for sometime in the future.

As another poster said, [new company] has a better long term future than [current employer].

Double vacation time.

You can move to make it a shorter commute.

You would really consider turning down a job over business casual?

The commute would be too long for me. . . Are you able to move closer?

Don't use your boss' words as a factor when you make your decision. Can't tell you how many times i've heard promises that lead to nothing because of blah blah blah

I'd just be honest with my current boss. Ask them if they are willing to match [new company's] salary.

Since you're not sure, I agree that you should just go ahead and tell [new company] you just don't want to commute that far for less than 90K, and just see what happens. I bet they'll go for the 90K. You already greased the wheels there, and they said it was possible. They're just trying to see if they can get you for less, is my guess.

Then, when they offer you 90K, you should take it, in my opinion, for all of the reasons mentioned.

1 hour commute time to [new company and you're currently work in NYC?

Hell no, they need to pay you way more than that for 2 hours each day of just commuting.
