Read the story closer. This wasn't just retail, this was a clothing manufacturer owned by Amazon.
Welcome to the world of big data. Companies like Amazon and Target can now anticipate demand precisely enough that they can adjust their staffing levels, to prevent having employees on the payroll during a time when there won't be enough work for them to do. It's great for the bottom line, but lousy if you're one of the people in the layoff or whose hours get cut.
Feel bad for people who hoped to stay on, but they should have known it was coming. All retail, fulfillment centers, distribution warehouses, etc... hire tons of seasonals and then lay most of them off once Christmas is over. This happens every single year. There's no shock or surprise about it.
I understand why retail sheds seasonal, but I find public announcements revolting.
The major phone and manufacturing have been doing that for years. Retail is catching up ya know?
