The manager of a Portland Taco Bell has been sentenced to anger management and community service for choking a pregnant employee, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
Wilkerson was sentenced to three years formal probation, 100 hours of community service and ordered to take anger management classes, have no contact with the victim and pay $250 in restitution.
The incident happened in June 2018. The article doesn't say, but I'd bet good money that the manager was fired immediately. Today's article is about the resolution of the criminal side of the case.
Absolutely the mgr needed to be fired, fined and otherwise punished, but OTOH I understand the frustration that led to her actions. Four months pregnant and already demanding extra breaks or other special treatment, I've worked with pregnant women like that and it can get ridiculous. But definitely there are better ways to handle that problem!
Taco Bell released the following statement in response to the incident:
"Taco Bell and the franchisee who owns and operates this location do not tolerate this type of behavior. This manager was terminated at the time of the incident and no longer works for the franchisee."
No surprise. That’s corporate America or anywhere involving profit these days. Management plays by a completely different set of rules. Basically there’s no “rules” that apply to them at all
I'm not excusing this behavior, but many low end service industry workers (including managers) are cut from a different cloth. From the vantage point of your average educated cubicle dweller, this probably sounds extraordinary and shocking. But based on tales from friends who've spent significant time in the service industry, I've heard some pretty exceptional stories regarding deplorable ethics and behavior. I'm glad that she is getting her due process.

Sometimes I think you make good points but I think you're way off on this one. First this woman is definitely not a part of the corporate culture, she's a store manager, you can't get much lower on the mgt totem pole than that. Plus she was punished, she is paying for her poor judgment and the stupidity of her actions so I'm not getting that she was somehow playing by 'different rules' like you imply, more like she was not playing by any rules, and it came back to bite her.
