Lots of things run through my mind when I'm thinking about taking some PTO. I'm always afraid my manager might say no and or he might view me as an absentee employee or something. My company gives every employee a certain number of hours for PTO, but I'm always afraid about asking.
Are you somehow more important, vulnerable or special than all the other employees who spend the PTO they earn? Why do you think you are different from everyone else?

I'm the lowest person on the team totem pole so I feel like I should refrain from taking PTO excessively. I took a day off 4 weeks ago and I feel guilty about asking for a day off, which I'd like to take this Friday. But I still haven't mustered up the courage to ask. It's a dumb mindset I know, but that's just how I feel.
Quite frequently actually. My teammates take several days off, but I still get anxiety about asking for just a day off. My manager has no issues when I've asked for PTOs before, but I just can never ask without this feeling of dread and sweaty palms.
I agree. You should "refrain from taking PTO excessively."
Is that what you plan to do? Doesn't sound like it.
I guess you are also not the type of person to speak up in meetings, suggest new ways of working, volunteer to lead teams or the like. You know, being timid is not going to get you off the lowest spot on the totem pole.
If your co-workers are not afraid to take time off, then neither should you despite being low on seniority. It sounds like your company is not concerned about employees taking the PTO time that they are due. So take and enjoy.
Your PTO is a benefit that you earn, and you should not be afraid of using it at all. If it would help you feel better, tell your manager something like you'd like to take Friday off, you've finished the XYZ project and you already talked to Ursula about covering any issues that come up. He might say no, but is that the worst thing that can happen?

Those are your earned days to use as you see fit. If they hold that against you, look for another job.
