I think to myself sometimes how so many people talk like everyone works in an office. You see things on TV, hear things on the radio, or just general conversation out and about where people talk as if we all have our own office and work in that type of atmosphere.
I'm sure there are a lot of people here like myself that don't work in an office, that actually do spend a lot of time working outdoors and getting our hands dirty. And this is nothing against those of you who do work in an office, just wanted to hear from those who are tired of everyone always assuming we all do.
Me. I'm always dirty, I work outside only. Detest office/indoor work environments. I was offered a position on Tuesday working inside and politely told them....that isn't what I do, but thank you kindly very much for the offer.
Haven't had an inside job in 25 years and intend to keep it that way.

Probably comes from lack of life experience........right from school into the office. It wasn't for me either......limited conversation(kindof like watching a sitcom and knowing the punchline long before they say it, ha).....office politics, dress code, neverending social events(no offense, but i'd rather see my family then people i've already seen for 8 hrs!)....
.....i like the freedom of nonoffice jobs........worked on the railroad, airport, logistic/warehouse jobs and currently on the road. When my shift is over it's over and I wouldn't have it any other way!
There's also nothing like not having a strict dress code. In my line of work as long as I don't wear anything offensive there's not much of a dress code, I can just wear blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a baseball cap and I'm good to go. I love it.
I work indoors and get my hands dirty (RN). I work nights in a psychiatric hospital, third shift, and dress like a veritable hobo (a real job perk, in my head).
I worked for two years as a tech writer in a cube farms and hated it- hated getting up in the morning, hated getting dressed, and found the content of the writing (and the purpose of the businesses) of no interest whatsoever. If I had an office job where the purpose of the organization interested me, I think I'd do a lot better, although I know the pay would probably prevent me from taking such a job (like editing newslettes for Oxfam America or something.)
A lot of "helping profession" don't work in offices, and they comprise a lot of the jobs that people have. It always annoys me when any job story or study assumes everyone works normal business hours in an office.
Of course, there can always be "office politics B.S." wherever you work!

To start with, I was born and raised on a Dairy Farm in Mi. On weekend and in the summers we cut trees for the Forestry and haul the logs to a paper mill.
As an adult in Ca, I worked for Winston Tire as a Brake and Front Suspension Mechanic.
Now I'm a Certified Small Engine Repair Technician(Mechanic), I repair Oudoor Power Equipment.
The only 2 "clean sit down" jobs I've ever had were:
(1) sitting on a stool stipping the cows after the milking machines were removed.
(2) Sitting at the work bench sharpening chain saws.
The hardest part was keeping my suit and tie clean
No offense to anyone,... but any sit down office, telemarketing or white collar job would bore the hell out of me.
But I respect everyone that does it, because it's work and there's nothing simple about.
It's one of the many things that keeps this counrty going.
Any jobs is easy if: you know what your doing and enjoy doing it.
My job is part laboratory, part office. You have lab space to work and a partitioned area to do paperwork, email, etc with a computer
