I am a supervisor at a place that is nothing but kaos. From the top to the bottom. It's something that I just can't get used to. I just started the job in May 2008 so I am not complaing because I was unemployed for awhile. But the way everyone deals with eachother is by arguing and being disrespectful.
I don't want to sound like a snob but it seems many of the employees are reformed( drug addicts, alcoholics,"name yours here"). Also it seems that the education levels are low. When I say education I don't mean formal education. It just seems like they are ignorant or something. And the office politics is the worst I have seen. Noone has any tolerence for the other whatsoever. I feel like I am changing into a person that I do not like.

How do you deal with kaos at work?
Without knowing the complete specifics, I would have a meeting where I would sit down with all the employees and address your concerns and tell them what you expect from them. Do you have a supervisor that is willing to back you up if you were to do this?
There's only one way to deal with KAOS ... Call Maxwell Smart at CONTROL!
Sorry, I know that's not helpful. You've been there long enough to make judgements and effect any changes you see necessary to ease the chaos. You're a supervisor; you get to set the tone. Meet with your employees as a group, outline what you've been seeing and why it's not working, and then ask for suggestions. Put the ball in their court first, and if/when they don't come up with solutions that you see as satisfactory, then give out your own suggestions and stick to them.
It's not really surprising that this environment is created in this PC, "me first!" world where no one is important except for number 1. It used to be "love your neighbor". Now, it's "my neighbor better love me and not offend me and kowtow to me or else!"
We're dealing with Kaos at my current employer where a small majority of employees have voted in the union and we have no right-to-work laws. In this upside down topsy-turvy world, the employees now think they control the company, so it's no surprise that everyone thinks of themselves as being the only important ones.
How do I deal with it? Although the attitude makes me angry, I fight the good fight. As a supervisor, work with those under you to improve things, plus work with other supervisors. Those are your only direct influences.
Well, it's the other sups that I am speaking about. I forgot to add that part.
