I received a call from a head hunter looking for someone for a position. I have received these types of calls before, but wasn't ever interested or looking for a change. This time, the job sounds perfect for me.

I sent her my resume last night and she is to call me this afternoon. I have never worked with a head hunter like this. At what point is it appropriate to ask who the company is, what the product is...? How do things move from this level? At what point do I have an opportunity to speak with someone directly from the company?

Eager for some advice!

Take the call, answer the questions in a manner that will allow the headhunter to want to get you an interview. Once you get to the place where the HH is ready to close the conversation just politely ask if you can ask the company name/product type. They'll let you know if it's cool to talk then or wait for an interview setup.

I have worked with a couple of different headhunters in the past and have found it to be a very good experience, although I got one job and did not get the other so my success has been mixed. The way it usually works is that you will have a basic phone interview with the headhunter, where she will collect the basic information that most companies get from a 1st interview. If the headhunter believes you are a fit then they will give you some more information and set up the interview. When the interview is set up you will find out the company and all other pertinent details.

If it works out then they usually will help you negotiate a salary, if there is not a fit then they are very good about giving you the reasons it did not work out, and any problems the potential employer had that you can correct for a job search in the future.

I have always asked right in the first serious conversation if they can disclose who the client is - generally they will... but if they won't then I ask them to disclose what industry it is in, where they are located, and relative size. They can usuually share those general characteristics - and alot of times it is enough to figure out who the company is.
