I'm working in Buffalo, NY doing data entry for a Financial company (to remain nameless)..
Right now I have a Information Technology diploma that I am not putting to use and it is frustrating..
I'm trying to figure out some good phrases for my resume that doesn't make me sound like a loser data entry clerk.
How about "handwriting analysis" "transfer of funds" (we enter account numbers of checks sometimes)..
I've been doing this gig for 2 years, so its a pretty large gap since my last real job, and I don't want to appear out of touch to a potential company in the future.
Try going online to your local Unemployment office, many have seminars on resumes and anyone can attend. I've had my resume reviewed several times to make sure I'm up with the current trends.
Information Technology?
Have you considered working at a library? I am not sure what all your degree involves but I know Information Technology can be useful in libraries.
I'd love to do data entry work.
I saw a part-time position (28 hours compared to the 21 I work now) for someone who does close captioning. I love close captioning and I love typing, I could do it all day long.
The only bad thing was that they wanted someone with experience.
I can type about 60-70 words a minutes.
Anyone have any tips on how to get my foot in the door?

The usual accepted wording for your position is "cash applications"
Loser data entry clerk??? those who do that for a living probably don't consider themselves losers! They probably are grateful to have a job too! And would Probably like the respect they are due for doing a necessary job
