We have a agency called CAREERLINK in Philadelphia and they placed unemployed people in jobs and track them for six months. So I decided to enroll and be assigned my own personal staffing specialist so I can get a job and then provide her a copy of my paystubs for six months. This wasn't my first choice of course but I have to make smart decisions in order to be employed again.
This is will be hard for me since I'm used to be on the side of the desk but I have to swallow that now and just get a steady paycheck again.
So my advice to anyone who has something like this in their city is to sign up and have someone else do the job searching for you because most companies only depend on agencies and employees to fill positions not people emailing their resume from home.

I would be interested in a Real dialogue of your experience, going through this process. What kind of job did you leave, the other side of desk. What kind of job now? What kind of pay, health, medical, etc...How far away from your home? What happens if it doesn't work out, do you lose your unemployment? What kind of committment did you make to yourself on how long you woud stick it out. Do you think you might stay beyond the recession period. Are you still sending out resumes or have you given up? Do you still get a u.c. check, since you are allowed to work and collect, depending on your total hours. Did you have to interiew. Did you get help interviewing as a possibly older worker? etc, etc.. Also good luck!!

Who is paying the fee to CAREERLINK? Hopefully it is not YOU. There are a lot of ripoffs geared towards the unemployed. For more information on that read Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Bait and Switch" and it will really open your eyes to the heartless charlatans out their preying on the unemployed. These days in NYC more and more companies are placing their own ads rather than going through and paying a middleman agency. They are only turning to agencies after their own searches have failed and only for particular skill sets that may be hard to find. Have you tried searching out all the companies in your field that are in your area and going on all of their websites and seeing if there are job postings for what you do and applying? My previous firm suddenly went out of business and I did that. I researched and found the 250 biggest and most prestigious firms in my field in the USA. I went over the list alphabetically and was determined to systematically visit all their websites in order and apply where I could. I got a GREAT job with a firm starting with the letter "C."

I was a staffing specialist before I was laid off which is why this would be hard for me. For 10 years I was interviewing job seekers and helping them find employment. The person who is helping to place me in a job is someone I met on a dating site so once I sign up I won't have to just accept anything that comes along. I already told her not to send my resume to a certain part of the city. I will stick it out as long as I can but it shouldn't take me long at all because number 1 I have 10 years of consistent work experience and a degree and on top of that she has relationships with employers all over the city. Yes in addition to being enrolled in careerlink I;m still sending out resumes and yes I get a U.C. check. Wednesday will be my first actual full unemployment check. Far as the job interviews, the employer won't contact me they will contact the staffing specialist and then she will let me know where to go and who to ask for when I go to the interview. The center assist people who don't have a resume and helps them put it together but I'm the type of person who is ready since my resume is already complete. She said she already sent my resume out seven employers

There is no fee because the agency gets money from the state once they find you a job and more money if you keep your job for six months. Yes I'm still researching and doing my own job searching and going to websites and emailing resumes and cover letters. I just decided to make this decision because the girl who will be helping me get a job told me she just got her girlfriend a job at the place where I went for a interview two weeks ago. So since she has so many relationships with employers why not have someone else help me get a job in addition to me looking myself which I feel will increase my chances of being employed before April.

Excellent!! It sounds like you will get what you want or close to it. (I have bad experience, with U.C., since if you make a decision to take a job and you are miserable after 2 days, you cannot change, without jeapordizing your u.c. benefits. It took me a month arguing with them to get my beneifts reinstated. So...make sure when you make your decision you really, really think about it. Also make sure you save at least 2000 dollars, so if something goes wrong, you will have money to hold you over while they review your case.)
But looking on the optimistic side, I am sure you will do well and will get through this period of uncertaintity and thanks for letting us know about this opportunity!

Well whatever job I do take will have to be close to what I was making and similar type of work which is why I'm clear on my resume about what I was i'm looking for and what I have done.

It's quite fascinating that it turns out that this was your profession. Your plethora of posts relating all the problems you've had with interviews seem to indicate that you know next to nothing about the interviewing process so this is quite an eye opener.
Well folks, I said to myself that I was never going to end up working for a grocery store, and I was going to find a great job that doesn't involve working in a call center. Well guess what? I am afraid that is what I am gonna have to do to get the little bills I have paid, and the 2008 income tax paid too. I am still not going to work for a call center under any circumstance, but I am gonna have to consider working for a grocery store or work in one of the most deadliest jobs in America: Convenience store Clerk for minimum pay. I had pride in my past experiences in an office and clerical environment, but sadly, most of those jobs are drying up and drying up fast. It is good to have pride in your experiences, but sometimes in order to survive, you have to push it aside for now until a better opportunity comes knocking.

Well Unemployment pays me more than a what a grocery store would so I know I wouldn't be going there.
