I'm not sure I'll give this idea too much consideration, but I'll ask about it anyway.

Would the position of Accounting Clerk as a new career/job be a good fit for a 55+ year old male? Would it just be a waste of time to get an associates degree in accounting at my age? I know I shouldn't be hung up on the age factor but it does need to be taken into consideration. Also, I have the impression that most accounting clerks are female, so would that work against me as well? There were a number of older people in the accounting and credit departments of the company I used to work at, but they had all been there for a long time. Would most employers welcome an inexperienced older male right out of college? Thanks.

I worked for many years as an accounting clerk. You do not need a degree for this. It is primarily a data entry type position. Attention to detail and the ability to deal with mind numbingly boring repetitive tasks are all you need.

I'm doing something similar now, I am 50 years old. I'm not married to "accounting clerk" for a job but I'm going to be casting a wide net to find a job and I want whatever training I can get.

It's never a waste of time to get an education. I already have my AA Degree so I'm taking classes to earn a Accounting Tech certificate, along with a few others, that should cover any office/administrative type position.

Agreed, no degree is required for "accounting clerk." It's mostly data entry, filing, collating, etc.

You're going to want to have a solid answer as to why you are looking for basically an entry level position at this point in your career.
