Hi, everyone. I have been in the hospitality industry for almost 10 years now working in casual/upscale restaurants and at resorts. Right now I'm waiting tables again and have been for the past couple of years. I REALLY want to get out of waiting tables and would do almost anything, but I'm also in college (I'm 26) and wont be done for a couple of years. I have applied to retail positions such as being a cashier or sales associate, but no one wants to hire me because I don't have experience. I know people see waiting tables as an unskilled job.

Since I'm going into the health care field I want to get a job in that field while 'I'm in school, so that I have some experience. I will be doing an 18 month internship for the field I'm going into, but I can't do that until I have finished my courses. The two year technical college where I live has a quick jobs program where they offered a few certificates in the health care field such as an EKG tech, EMT, and a few other things, but when I want job search engines I only saw a couple of positions for these jobs or they want you to have so many years of experience. I was thinking of going to a local career one stop center, but I don't know if they can help me or not. I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice or anything?
Thanks.

Holy head is spinning!

Do you want a job in retail or in your field?

What type of retail are you looking at? Some places, yes, they want experience. But the average grocery store doesn't, they will train you.

Nothings impossible. If you luck up someone will take a chance on you. Why not try asking for register duties at the places you wait tables.

Take the CNA course, it takes four Saturdays. CNA's seem to be in demand everywhere. The pay is lousy and work is bone numbing, but you'd hopefully meet people who would be good references later.

Does your school have any on-campus jobs? I worked in a lab for a while while in college. I just saw it advertised in the school paper classified ads and applied. I also was a "research assistant" for a busy professor for a few semesters. You should have opportunities right on your own campus.
