So I've been in the work force now 4 years out of college, and I've worked in sales for 3 different companies. I like sales, I have a record of success, but one way or another these companies have found ways to shake things up and mess with my compensation to where I was forced to leave. Well I found a great job where I'm at, it's a lot of cold calling to set up face to face meetings, but it pays well.
However, with the economy, I'm realizing this company isn't giving much time to new reps to begin turning things around. I'm in the IT industry, and it can take 6 months, even a year, to have a project get approved for a company to shell out thousands of dollars for me to get a sale. Relationships take years to build sometimes before you can get a sale. My company has begun firing sales reps who aren't hitting quota after 6 months. I'm in my 5th month and I haven't sold anything yet. Maybe I'm just not very good at it, but that's not the point.
My problem is that I can't afford to be unemployed. I live in Downtown Chicago and I've cut back a lot, but it can be an expensive lifestyle to maintain, and rent isn't cheap. If I were to get laid off, I have nothing in savings to support myself for any reasonable period of time it would take for me to find a new job. Most likely this scenario would require me to move home to Minnesota and live with one of my parents. I really do not like Minnesota, nor has living with my parents been a good fit.
I need to get into another job area, but I'm having trouble as most jobs that fit my degree require 3 years of specific industry or job related experience. My degrees are in Marketing, and another in Management Information Systems. It's a tough market with a lot of unemployed people out there, so it's not idea to be picky, but I'm open to anything that I'm qualified for at this point.

Any advice?
start looking for new employment, in the meantime start saving for potential rainy days, who knows what will happen in this economy
Good luck, I got downsized from a software company when they got rid of 50% of their sales force and gave it to the telemarketing department. If I was younger I would simplify, get my expenses down and start my own company.

It's funny you guys say this, because I thought about this and other people basically told me I don't have the money or the knowledge to be able to pull it off.
you know I;m at a serious cross roads right now - you may be on to something! How long and how is the best way to finance a new company? What if I only have 40k to put down on an business....who's going to loan me the other thousands it takes to start a new buisiness.
