I'm wanting a change, both in terms of the job and location. I'm thinking about moving closer to my family again (my company has locations in adjacent states from family, but not in the family's state). I figured my best shot right now would be to get a new job within the company, but in another location. I tried talking to my HR manager about all of this the other week and while she was receptive to the idea of pulling some strings to get me internally transferred within the same city, she said she wouldn't be able to help me for any out of state position, which is understandable. I guess right now I'm torn between two decisions:
1. Secure a job in the city where my family lives in first. Then move out of state and leave the company.
2. Secure a new job within the company, but in a different location. Then move out of state and move into the new state that is closer to family.
(Bottom line is, I refuse to not have a job secured before moving in this economy.)
The problem with #1 is that once I move back in with family, I will always be obligated to have to see them all the time. While I love my family, I don't want to always feel like I'm obligated to see them.
The problem with #2 is that the future boss could easily look up my current boss within the company. He or she could conceivably call my current boss before I even get the interview (according to some people I've talked to within the company). This means that I would have to tell my boss before I even start applying for jobs that I am wanting to go. Also, within my company, I heard that when you get an interview scheduled (don't know if it's before the interview time is scheduled or after), an email gets sent to both the future boss and the current boss. :O
Both #1 and #2, however, give me a good excuse to leave my current state and job. All I have to say is that I'm wanting to be closer to family (which I really do) and I don't think that would burn any bridges.
While I get great benefits and pay with the company I work with right now, I sometimes wish I could work in a place where people are in general more liberal than conservative (and I have few other unrelated gripes about the company itself), but I feel like I'm asking for too much in this economy right now.
So my questions are:
1. Would it be more difficult to find a job with a new company out of state rather than transferring within my company out of state? Or would they both be equally as difficult? I'm a software engineer with about 3 years experience, so still only have entry-level experience to market myself with.
2. Has anyone personally had to deal with a future employer trying to call your current boss before you even get an interview scheduled? Should I tell my boss early on? I don't want him to get the surprise call if there's a good chance he will get it. I have a pretty good relationship with him and I don't want to burn bridges, especially since this is my first real job in the field I've had.
3. Any other thoughts? Similar experiences you want to share?
