Sports that originated in your part of the world (golf, cities)

The most popular team sport in Australia is football…Australian rules football. Outside Australia its pretty much confined to countries in the South West Pacific, so it’s not going to threaten soccer globally any time soon. But that hasn’t dimmed enthusiasm for it locally.

So what sports are there, well known or not, even quirky and obscure, that originated or evolved into a distinct variation of another sport, in your country?

Well, hockey, obviously. Also Lacrosse.

I've read that American football, is a modified version of Canadian football, which was a modified version of British rugby.

Scotland - rugby 7s, golf, curling, first international, and first league system, highland games.

And of course ''organised'' football/soccer

I've always wondered... was it actually inspired by baseball at all or by cricket or was it thought up independently?

Yes, it was inspired by baseball and the "kingball" game played here in the late 1800's (a similar game). Some traces can be found into cricket learned from English sailors.

Nowadays it's only big in a few rural communes. Of the 20 largest cities in Finland only two (Jyväskylä and Seinäjoki) have a representant in the National League.
