New York vs London - This one has gotta take the cake. Two rivals for unofficial capital of the world.

London vs Paris - The two European heavyweights, so different yet parallels of each other in terms of size, position in their countries. Both are cultural hot-spots.

New York vs Chicago - Arguably an even bigger rivalry than NY vs LA because they are more similar. NY generally comes out well in front though, although there was the brief skyscraper rivalry in the early 20th century.

Madrid vs Barcelona - Although neither are huge by world standards, I just feel there is a lot of rivalry between Spain's two major cities. Catalan pride probably also fuels the flames, as well as Madrid people thinking they are the centre for culture.

Sydney vs Melbourne - Not so well known outside Australia, there is actually a very real rivalry between our two largest cities. When we wanted to build a capital city, we decided to put it somewhere in between the two. Sydney has the glamour and the scenery, but Melbourne is stronger on the culture, arts and sporting front.

New York vs Tokyo - The third major comparison...culturally still very different, but both vie for being financial capitals of the respective hemispheres.

Rio de Janeiro vs Sao Paulo - Two Brazilian megacities - one is the business/commercial engine of Brazil, the other is a spectacular beauty sunning herself on the Bay, also party central.

Rome vs Milan - The fashion/business capital vs the historic and cultural capital. Like chalk and cheese, both there's a tug of war between the two.

Berlin vs Munich - A rivalry sort of diluted by Hamburg, Frankfurt and the greater Ruhr region, the capital of Bavaria and the capital both offer different sides to Germany.

Beijing vs Shanghai - One conjures up over 1,000 years of history and the monuments and treasure's of China's history, the other is a pulsating modern metropolis and has for 100 years been China's gateway to the rest of the world and vice versa.

Other major rivalries:

Toronto vs Montreal

Hong Kong vs New York (mainly skyscraper/finance/wealth)

Hong Kong vs Singapore

New York vs Los Angeles

Edinburgh vs Glasgow

Manchester vs Leeds

Kuala Lumpur vs Singapore

Los Angeles vs San Francisco

Boston vs Philadelphia

Atlanta vs Houston

Ho Chi Minh City vs Hanoi

Tokyo vs Osaka

Copenhagen vs Stockholm

I doubt that world cities consider themselves as rivals. I've never heard of rivalry among world cities. City rivalry probably exists only in America. Americans make a competition out of everything.

You would be wrong. City rivalries are heated in many other countries. The Sydney vs Melbourne rivalry would rival any American city rivalry.

Moscow is THE TOP city in Europe. Paris and London are dwarfs.

Moscow isn't in the EU and isn't always considered Europe proper. Sure it might have billionaires, but in terms of prominence or international significance, they do not compare to London or Paris.
