Lol---this thread is freakin' hilarious. I know that for some weird reason, when I've gone to the campsites in France, they have the stupid rule that men cannot go into the pools UNLESS they're wearing those Speedos.
Needless to say my husband and sons haven't been in a pool in France. I think it's an embarrassment thing--who want people to see your shrunken "package" after after coming out of a cold pool? I can't say that even I'd want to see it!
Nobody expect your men to wear "those Speedos"" but what is and has been considered swim wear in Europe. Do you gawk:>)
You're right, it is quite bizarre to see young American guys coming out of the sea, swathed in yards of soaking wet cloth.
This shift toward ever-larger and longer bathing trunks began in the late 80's and accelerated in the 90's from what I saw in the U.S. This was the era of AIDS and of the increasing visibilty of gay men (who were very casual about showing their bodies), so it seemed to me that it was a reaction by American guys against the possibility that they might "look gay."
This "does it look gay if...." seems to be a regular theme among American men in the clothing and fashion forum...sandals, shorts, you name it.
So, when I was a 7 year-old wearing long shorts back in 1975, I was trying to not look gay?

no, but I am sure you were not the person who picked your long shorts in 1975. You dad during the years you grew up already made sure that you only consider long trunks as the only acceptable option for a man to swim in.
A fat man with a 36+ waistline of course will look bad in Speedos, but they look bad in everything in general anyway, and the trunks are not gonna help.
If they are so concerned about "looking bad", I suggest never show any part of their fat and hideous body in public at all.
Do people like to see those saggy man boobs any better than fat bellies and thighs? I don't think so.

Only guys with small packages are afraid to wear Speedos imo.

Because of fashion women haven't learned to appreciate male legs, only their own.
