I had a colleague from south England (somewhere near the sea) and I could only understand 70% what he said.
I thought I was alone but later other Europeans told me they had difficulties too. And even someone from Scotland said so.

In linguistics there is no right way or wrong way to speak, the most important thing is the communication. But since we learn in the schools the "English of the Queen" or the standard American English, these are easier to understand for foreigners.

Have friends from Newcastle and Sutherland areas, and if Ive not spoke to them on a phone for a while it takes me ages to get used to their accents again.. Id say they have the worst to understand, whereas I can understand US and Canadian accents no bother..

Aren't Geordie and Irish both pretty similar to Scottish? BTW, I love all three of them as accents. I'm a sucker for British Isles accents anywhere outside the South East.

They are very different, as an Englishman though it is probably easier to pick up the differences - isn't it funny how a native of an English speaking country can pick up the differences in their own country more so than natives of other English speaking countries I can tell the difference between estuary English and cockney but can't tell the difference between American and Canadian accents!
