Is Europe or the USA making better decisions with regard to:
1. Health care
2. Transportation
3. Economics
4. Freedom
5. Foreign Relations

This may have to go into Great Debates but hopefully not. Yeah I know europe is a collection of countries and the US is a collection os tates into 1 country but Europe Inc. and USA have chosen different paths. Here's my takes as objective as I know how:

1 Health Care - I know this is controversial area but when you look at the numbers, Europeans are getting a better deal with their health care. They are spending much less and still getting good results with longer average life spans than Americans. The USA has good health care but it is much too expensive. I think due to the US pharmaceutical industry, medical practitioners, and medical equipment decisions, it has resulted in high costs and pay for the medical/pharmaceutical/medical equipment industries. These high profits have propelled research and development of the best medical equipment and pharmaceuticals and |USA incorporated profits from this.

2. Transportation - I think the Eurpean decision to develope subways and trains systems is superior to the US reliance on cars for practically all travel. The US is spread out and less dense which makes it more difficult but there are plenty of cites in the US that cold have more developed subway/public transportation systems imho.

3. Economics - The US system relies on less Govt involvement and gives more freedom to employers versus workers than European system. Although the US is moving toward the European model, I think the US system has proven better with more opportunity to develop and grow.

4. Freedom - Once again, even though there are more restrictions in the last 10-12 years in the US, there are still more freedoms to express, more freedom of broadcasters, and more personal freedoms like gun rights than Europe.

5. Foreign Relations - I'm calling this even. The US does more good and harm than all of Europe combined because the US does make decisions and takes actions. Great sometimes, horrible sometimes. Even.

When I look over these categories but my subective pick is US over anywhre in Europe. Anybody care to comment?

I think the health care and public transportation systems are better in Europe than in the USA.

Exactly how many more of these kinds of threads are there going to be? You all know full well it's going to turn into a US vs Europe bashing thread.

US wins on economy. Europe wins on everything else.

I just want to respond to your proclamation about freedom. Buying a gun like a doughnut has nothing to do with freedom. We all live in 21st century and you do not live in the Wild West. With exception of Breivik´s massacre 2 years ago, there are no massacres in Europe like you have in the USA. If your country is full of criminals and you need a gun to protect your family, I guess there is something wrong and maybe you should consider moving out or try to change the US policy about that. And if you compare the USA for example to Ukraine, you are right about freedom to express what you think, but I´m not sure about that if you compare your country for example to Germany, the UK or France.

Since when do you need a license and a background check to buy a doughnut in the US?
And you can't just omit the Breivik massacre, it happened and Europe does get massacres.

I think it's an ok comparison considering our country spans a continent. It takes all of those countries to make the comparison remotely fair.

Having said that:

Health Care - Europe

Transportation - depends on location in both places. In a way, this isn't really a fair comparison due to the different geographical features of both places. Paris, London, Dublin, Hamburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Amsterdam are found in rather flat areas where the only real obstacle would be water which is easily traversed. the place in the US like this is the eastern seaboard. Western metro areas are generally quite isolated making air travel more necessary due to steep mountain ranges more extensive than those in Europe.

Economics - US wins this one.

Freedom - Both places have their restrictions. Tie.

Foreign relations - European countries for the most part seem better at not creating so many enemies. However, the US is better at taking care of things as someone else mentioned such as humanitarian aide.

I guess overall I can't say either is better than the other, just different and which differences one prefers is what's better for such a person.
