Honestly it just seems like a white elephant for England to have those island. England gave away almost all of its colonies, why does it cause such a fuss over a little piece of land off Argentina's coast. Argentina had the Malvinas originally, I think is time they take back what originally belonged to them

The English were on the FALKLANDS long before a single Platinean had set his foot on that barren rock. The Falklands were given to the La Plata Rebublic who held it for like six years, after which the British took over the administration again. Argentina has NO right to the Falklands, and I can't believe how this has become a common misbelief. Argentina got interested in the islands only to divert the attention from the homeland and the crumbling military dictatorship, and sent young conscripts to die there. The people of the Falklands have in at least two referendums decide that they want to stay with Britain, and there's only a handful of Argentinians living there. The rest are mostly ethnic British.
The Falklands are not a oppressed colony that been robbed from anyone, it's a self-governing integral part of Britain. On the contrary, it was the Argentinians who wanted to unlawfully snatch the territory from the British.

Why? The people who lived generations on the island want to stay as part of the UK. Argentina pretty much never settled those islands and their claims to it are pretty weak. Let the people who have inhabited and worked the islands for generations decide what they want instead.
What Argentina really needs to do is stop making a large fuss about it, because whenever things are going terribly domestically, the government of the time tries to divert attention towards the Malvinas/Falklands. That's a wonderful way to not have to make any actually important government action and reform.

Britain returned sovereignty to existing populations. For example, Britain once had a colony named British Honduras, which is now Belize. However multiple nations, notably Guatemala, have made claims on Belize's territory. Should the colony have been incorporated into Guatemala? Does Belize deserve the right to be independent? It's impossible to re-litigate centuries of claims and counter claims from empires that don't exist anymore. The most reasonable thing to do is work out some peaceful resolution respecting the rights and wishes of the current inhabitants.
Why do people respect the independence claims of East Timor over those of the Falklands? Both are tiny islands near much larger countries that have a different culture due to historical influences. It seems unfair, if not hypocritical, to support one and not the other.
Up until the Falklands war, almost no one in Britain had heard of, much less cared about, the Falklands. Independence would be granted immediately if the islanders requested it. However, as it's obvious that as Argentina won't respect the islands' independence, the Falklanders have no choice but to maintain ties to Britain for defensive purposes. Of course, the probability of oil and gas deposits complicates the equation.
The real issue is symbolic: the Falklanders are very, very white and very, very British. Argentina has always had a love-hate relationship with Britain. Indeed, for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Argentina itself was an unofficial colony (economically speaking) of Britain. When British economic interests were driven out with the coups in the 1930s and subsequent Peronism, Argentina began it's great decline that continues to this day.
Argentines are simultaneously snobbish and insecure. They consider themselves the most European country in Latin America. To them, a territory even more snobbish and European right next door is intolerable.
I truly believe that were the population of the Falklands less white, and were they connected to any country other than Britain, none of this would be an issue. It's very easy and socially acceptable to be anti-British.
So who has the right to rule and who does not? Doesn't seem like Argentina. Not to mention the referendums. I would like to challenge anyone not wearing a terrorist-Che Guevara shirt to justify the Argentinian right on this.

I agree with you, Ariete. I fully support the UK in this case, the Falklands are British lands, end of story. Just wish other latinos would put aside their "ethnic pride" and realize that Argentina makes false claims on the island whenever their government is in trouble as a distraction, nothing more. Sometimes I even wonder if the Argentine government actually acres about the islands anymore, because they only raise a stink about them whenever they need a convenient distraction.
