In a foreign country, nobody sees your passport, and your nationality is not known by anybody unless you tell them. You are judged as what people presume you to be. Which is why so many Americans have Canadian flags sewn onto their backpacks, but no Canadian has an American flag..

When I (an American) studied in Scotland, while I was generally regarded as an American, it was my Norwegian heritage that was harped on.

Depends on the country. In Italy I perceive they take more seriously the question about heritage, so I feel myself at home in Italy.

Im Australian but happen to have a very long Greek surname, so i tend to be judged on both...in Greece you are pretty much seen as both, on my other travels to Canada/US im an Aussie...until someone sees my surname everything changes and im as much Greek as Aussie...i recall my first experience in Toronto when i told someone my name and they instantly begged me to visit to Greektown.

neither--- you are judged primarily by your behavior, overseas and here. sadly many respond with the accusation that they are being mistreated bek of their skin tone. the difference is outside the USA you can get away with a lot less than here bek of the guilt factor here for past mistreatment of minorities..

I look German and speak a weird language, so I'm usually well accepted. When I'm telling that I'm not Baltic, people become even more friendly.

I have a very generic European look which means I can pass for a local in any European country pretty much.

In non-Caucasian countries people seem to think I am a ''westerner" (rich in many cases I suppose) but since I am obsessive about trying to speak the local language this probably goes against the stereotype they have of Americans so they rarely mistake me for one even though I could be one with the way I look.

It's not the nationality nor the ethnicity,it's money that brings power and respect.
