I don't understand social media petitions. Posting stuff on Facebook in the western world creates basically a week-long philanthropist out of someone who feels good signing and sharing stuff aimlessly. The problem is common people just see some biased person or organization with an agenda write something really pretty, the user does no additional research, and then you have the wrong kind of people silently protesting online. People should physicslly do something if they are actually passionate about the issue. At least then they're more likely to be genuinely educated about so and so.
Also, facebook and twitter are quickly becoming the wal-marts of the internet, and not a very good platform to state your cause if you want to be taken seriously by your opressors or whom/whatever else.
Through the most used media. How did people organized protests before Facebook and Twitter ? Facebook is a tool, the protests are the goal. The % of success from Facebook protests is most likely close to 0% if people don't do real stuff.. It's only a communication's tool, Marxists used the print press and it worked quite well. In Latin America the radio did quite a good job too. Today it's internet. If Facebook didn't exist, people would use something else and the end would certainly had been the same..
I have to agree. Along with that, we have become way to complacent and lazy. We all talk at home of things we detest about the government, world, etc., but never actually bother to do anything about it.
I was in Ukraine in December, at the beginning of the protests, and it was remarkable how well organized, thoughtful, and respectful many of the protesters were. They brought food, water, and shelter for others; made sure not to harass the police (that worked for a little while); and didn't make disrespectful signs towards others or the government. I'm not sure we're capable of that.
Give us something to protest about so we can see how "well organized and respectful" we are
I think part of the reason is that you can get arrested for protesting without a permit. That doesn't look good on a job application. Plus, how can you protest during the weekdays if you have a job and they don't let you go.
