This is a personal opinion, btw.

The three contenders are Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Madrid.

Mexico City has the biggest population but, correct me if I'm wrong, Madrid has the biggest GDP and ranks highest in most things.

Of course, two are in Latin America and one is in Europe.

I'm wondering, do most Spanish speakers still see Madrid is the unofficial capital or mother city of the Spanish speaking world?

Is it a bit like London vs NY, although BA and Mexico City are so much bigger?

I'd venture to say Mexico City, if anything else just for being the biggest and richest of all three. Capital city of the most populous Spanish speaking country in the world. Also, lets not forget that it's sphere of influence extends from places like California and Texas -due to their significan Mexican populations- all the way to the Central American nations.

Are you saying that there are no significant cities in the Spanish-speaking world,

OR

that none of three stands out ahead of the other two?

What do you mean by richest? Mexico City has the highest total GDP because it is by far the largest but overall the average standard of living is the lowest of the three and it's the poorest of this trio.

When it comes to how rich these cities are the ranking would be:

1 - Madrid
2 - Buenos Aires
3 - Mexico City

Mexico City.

It has 22 millionish people. 22 million!!!! It's huge, and it's the centre of Mexico where people come to live a more big-city cosmopolitan life. Any law made in DF applies to the rest of the country and Mexico is the most populated Spanish-speaking country, and DF as a city if I'm not mistaken.

I know Madrid and BA are important, but i don't think as important. Although I've never been to BA. It seems too isolated to contend.

Madrid is great, but it's the outlier of Spanish-speaking cities.
